Welcome
We are based in Cumbernauld, just north of Glasgow and have a plentiful - and continuously expanding! - supply of quality horse manure. All the horses are fed hay from the Carse of Stirling region of Central Scotland - widely regarded as producing the very best hay in the UK and they all graze on land which is never treated with any chemicals of any kind. The manure comes from wood shaving beds and has been composted for between 12 to 18 months so it can be safely added to your growing areas without the risk of burning or damaging your plants or vegetables.
Horse manure is one of the oldest soil fertilisers known to man and as it contains plentiful amounts of the 3 main elements required for plants to grow - namely nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium - along with many essential trace elements, it is ideal for gardeners requiring a nutrient rich soil conditioner, a surface mulch or as an aid to planting.
Ideal for:
- having as a mulch for garden plants
- soil improvement
- your garden fruit and vegetables
Trees and shrubs
- Dig a hole at least double the size of the pot or root ball.
- Put a thick layer of horse manure into the hole.
- Place your tree, shrub, or rose bush in the hole.
- Add a mixture of soil and manure around the roots.
- Firm the soil around the roots.
- Water well and continue to do so until plant or tree is established.
Lawn dressing
- Laying new turf
- Fork a 1 to 2 inch coating of horse manure into the soil before laying the turfs. Water well and DON'T let the turf dry out.
- Seeding new lawns
- Rake a 1 to 2 inch coating of horse manure into the soil. Sow the seeds and water well. DON'T let the soil dry out and keep it moist until the seed is established.
- Established Lawns
- Feed your lawn by raking or brushing in a 1/2 inch layer of horse manure.
Herbaceous borders
- By adding a healthy amount of our horse manure to your herbaceous borders, you are ensuring that your prized perennials will receive the nutrients they require through the slow release of this natural fertiliser.
Vegetables
- Adding horse manure to your soil is a great way to improve your vegetable crop. Vegetables can benefit from the additional nutrients that horse manure provides with potatoes, carrots, sweetcorn, broad beans and tomatoes being particularly suited.
- Check out our vegetable page for hints and tips on using manure in your vegetable plot.
Soil conditioning
- Horse manure is ideal for improving the 2 main types of troublesome soils.
- Clay soils
- The manure helps prevent waterlogging by enhancing the drainage. This in turn improves the texture of the soil therefore making it easier to work with.
- Sandy / Chalky soils
- The manure adds much needed bulk and nutrients to the soil which won't be as easily leached away by rainfall.
Mulching
- Our well composted horse manure is ideally suited as a mulch to help keep weeds to a minimum, retain soil moisture and insulate plant roots from extremes in the weather.
- A generous amount of horse manure - a covering of around 2 to 3 inches - should be applied over the surface of the soil.
- The mulch will also provide the plants with a moisture retaining slow release fertiliser.
